Kanagawa Wave

A woodblock portrait cut into Hokusai’s Great Wave, Fuji in the distance.

Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa, the most famous print in the world, recut as a Japanese woodblock with the animal in it. The animal is not pasted onto the print but cut in the same block: flat fields of colour, thin keylines and the same paper grain, with its own coat colour and its eyes in their true colour. Behind the head the wave rears up in Prussian blue with claws of white foam, never over the face, snow-capped Mount Fuji in the distance. A cat or dog portrait in the print everyone knows.
